While Hunter took care of his first love in the hospital, I was pacing around the dark living room, biting my nails nervously.
No matter how hard I tried to reassure myself that everything would be okay, I was powerless against the bitter thoughts and ferocious ideas that were shackling my heart.
I stared at the large clock, watching the time go by. I was afraid that when Hunter would come back, but what's more, that he would not appear. Thinking that he'd stay with Tess all night, my heart shattered and I couldn't breathe properly.
I squatted down sadly, as if this is the only way to keep my mind clear and support my body from passing out on the floor.
Boom!
With the heavy noise, the door burst open.
My drowsy consciousness suddenly woke up, and I immediately stood up from the sofa.
Looking at his indifferent expression, I forced myself to hold back the tears from the corners of my eyes. I took a deep breath, trying to make my voice sound as if nothing had happened.
I smiled and said, "Hunter, you're back. Would you like something to eat?"
In the past, when he came back home late, I always prepared supper for him, but this time he didn't accept it. He looked stern, as if I had made some huge mistake. He said sternly, "Iva, that's enough, aren't you tired of playing a good wife for so long?"
I gulped when I saw how venomously his face was glaring at me. My chest tightened as my heart began to pound, I asked, "Hunter, what do you mean?"
"I think I made my point clear. Divorce!"
Although I was mentally prepared to face such a cruel fact, when I heard his words again, I was still so heartbroken that I couldn't breathe.
I took a deep breath, trying not to chatter my teeth. "Hunter, I know you must be very happy that Tess woke up. But, you said that to me on purpose so as not to make Tess feel sad, right? If so, then I am willing to pretend that we are not married in front of her. As long as you allow me to stay with you, I don't care about anything else."
If my parents saw how I was so humble for a man, they would definitely feel distressed for their precious daughter.
But the man in front of me treated my wet pained eyes as the tears of a crocodile.
"Oh, it's your hypocritical face that successfully deceived everyone, pretending that you don't want anything, but behind the scenes, you are so vicious that you don't hesitate to kill Tess to achieve your plan!" Hunter said sharply, his eagle eyes were as sharp as to shoot me through. "I'm really not in the mood for your Oscar-winning acting after what you made Tess go through. Pack your bags and leave my house before I throw you out myself. You have lost the little bit of sympathy I had for you."
"Kill Tess?" I suspected that I heard it wrong. I saved Tess when she passed out in that car accident, and when I knew that I matched her blood type, I gave her a blood transfusion without hesitation.
And since then, I have been going to the hospital for blood transfusions every month!
I grabbed Hunter's arm, scared he would leave, and cried, "No, no. I didn't do it."
"Don't pretend to be surprised." Hunter shook off me in disgust and sneered. "Oh, you're really so wicked. I should have listened to my mother; she was always right about you. You really have the audacity to ask me what you did after leaving Tess on the verge of death. To further your nefarious plan to get married even though you were the one to cause that accident, you even lied to me about saving her. I have no idea how evil someone could be, who always has this pitiful face that could never be questioned."
I was taken aback beyond words, unable to believe what he had said. I flinched at the dark looks in his eyes, trembling uncontrollably. I had never seen so much hatred and loathing in those honey-brown eyes which I had all dreamed of seeing love in them. It feels like everything in my life was falling apart, including myself.
"I didn't do any of that. I did save her! Have you forgotten how I go to the hospital to give her a blood transfusion on the first of every month?" I rolled up my sleeves and pointed to the countless needle holes on my arm.
But not only did he not feel distressed, he grabbed my chin with his big hand and said mockingly, "Oh, Isn't this part of your plan? "
"No! No! I didn't do anything." I repeated it over and over again. Suddenly, I thought of surveillance, and as if I had grasped a life-saving straw, I was pleasantly surprised, "You can go check the video surveillance at that time, it must be recorded! You might know that I'm not lying!"
"Surveillance? How dare you mention it after you destroyed it? " He grabbed my chin hard, as if my jaw would be broken if I moved a bit.
What?! The last hope was also shattered. I couldn't believe that Tess could force me to leave Hunter like that.
I wanted to defend myself, but what he said next, it completely woke me up.
"Get out of here, or I can't guarantee that I will act violently on you. Tess has suffered too much."
"So you convicted me without doing any investigation." I bite my lip hard so as not to faint. "If I don't leave, then, to eliminate your lover's grievances, will you call the police and arrest me?"
After I finished speaking, I looked at his handsome face, trying to figure out why he treated me so ruthlessly.
"Stop trying to get sympathy with that pathetic look, I won't believe any of your word. At eight of tomorrow morning, someone will send you a divorce agreement." Hunter growled and turned around to leave.
Looking at his ruthless back, I felt the coldness in my heart expand step by step. Even though there was no wind, I felt as if I was standing naked on the top of Mount Everest, cold to the bone.
The last time I was so broken was the death of my parents, but after marrying Hunter, my gloomy world had light again, but it disappeared now. My three-year marriage seemed to be just a mirage that can't stand the light.
As CEO of a top group, he possessed incomparable and accurate judgement, but he believed such an obvious lie from Tess.
All his trust was because of a word of love. He loves Tess, so he trusts her unconditionally. He doesn't love me, so my giving became scheming.
How pathetic I am!
My husband who I've been with for three years turned a blind eye to my dedication, and accused me of being a gold digger in just one night. I was too naive to dream that he would see my unreserved dedication and fall in love with me someday. Until now, it seemed that not only did he not fall in love with me, but he wanted me dead instead.
Enough is enough, Hunter said that I have done enough, it is enough, then!
You can never wake up a person who pretends to be asleep. Hunter paralyzed himself in Tess' love, everything I did was just superfluous.
So be it.
I abruptly wiped my tears and rose from the cold floor. I took out my phone and dialed the number of the person who had been standing in the light and wanted to pull me out of the darkness.
"Come pick me up and get the divorce papers ready tomorrow."
